The
Foyle Cup had its beginnings in 1992 when the
Derry and District Youth F.A. decided to organize
their own youth football tournament in the city
to cater for the needs of its youth and indeed the
youth of Ireland, North and South and to simultaneously
give them the opportunity to 'pitch' their skills
against the finest opposition the association could
attract to the city.
The event has grown into a sixty-four
team - five day event and has attracted Premier
League clubs in England and Scotland as well teams
from the Nationwide Leagues.
Celtic FC, Man Utd FC, Leeds Utd FC, Manchester
City FC, Nottingham Forest FC, Ipswich Town FC,
Hearts FC, Aberdeen FC, Charlton Athletic FC and
many others applying each year for entry into what
is now generally thought of as Britain's best organized
youth football tournament. In 2002 Montpellier,
BVO Emmen, Cambridge United, Albion Rovers, Blackburn
Rovers and Glentoren competed for the first time.
