WELCOME to
the 33rd anniversary of the GOTHIA CUP. In 1975, 259
teams from 10 different countries began it all with
the first event. In 2008 more than 1400 teams from
50+ nations participated!
From the moment you arrive, you will hopefully be
walking on air from the first contacts with people
from all over the world to the first group match and
the magnificent OPENNING CEREMONIES at the Ullevi
World Cup Stadium. There will be teams of the highest
caliber mixing together with those of more modest
ambitions. And, the GOTHIA CUP has played host to
great players like Alan Shearer! Even if your team
can't make it with the best, there are always the
B-Finals so every gets to play and great games such
as over 25,000 spectators who watched the 1989 final
between Hadjuk Split (formerly Yugoslavia, currently
Croatia) and Tahuichi of Bolivia.
After the final whistle, there is a new game; Gothenburg
itself. There is so much to do and the night always
seems like a long time away; during this time of year
the sun hardly goes down! Gothenburg is a safe city
with few policemen. With the SUPER CARD in your hand,
the whole city is at your feet. Many of the city's
attractions are open to you and as well transport
on the city's transport system. Games are played
all over the city, but each participant will receive
the SUPER CARD for free transport. The Tournament
begins with group play of four or five teams. The
winners and the runners up qualify for the "A" play-off
with the third-place team in the "B" play-off. Teams
knocked out after the first round are offered friendly
matches against other Gothia Cup teams.
