* GREAT SIGHTSEEING!
Durham After
the Normans defeated the Saxons at Hastings in 1066,
they set out to subdue the local population and built
great cathedrals of worship. Two of these cities are
within an hour of Newcastle. Durham has a massive
cathedral and a castle which, since its original construction
in the 12th century, has had many architectural additions.
York has the second
most famous cathedral (or minster) in England next
to Canterbury. A L6,000,000 ($10,2000,000) restoration
has just been completed, although it can be said that
restoration is an on-going process. York also has
the Jorvik Center, where the excavations of the original
Viking are open and Clifford's Tower, the keep of
the original Norman castle in the town. York is also
famous for its city walls.
Edinburgh
SCOTLAND
Edinburgh is the Scottish capital and what great
city it is! It is only 90 minutes by train from Newcastle.
Get off at Waverley Station, the bridge that separates
the New and Old Towns. You will be met by a guide
who will lead a walking tour of the Old Town, the
Royal Mile and the famous castle. Then, spend the
afternoon exploring the city on your own, eating in
any of the great restaurants (or sidewalk cafes) on
the Royal Mile or shopping on Princes Street in the
heart of the New Town. Book you passage now!
While in Newcastle
don't forget to visit one of the many NEWCASTLE
UNITED shops in the city,at
St. James' Park or in
Gateshead at the Metro Center.
